Outlander PHEV gets updates for Japan

Mitsubishi will be making several improvements to the Outlander PHEV in its home market. It's getting more electric power, a bigger gas engine, a bigger battery, improved suspension and two new drive modes. The battery's capacity increases from 12kWh to 13.8kWh, which boost its electric range to 40.4 under Japans testing cycle. Engine displacement is going from 2.0 to 2.4l and the vehicle will now offer Sport and Snow modes. To improve its ride and handling, Mitsubishi has added larger front and rear dampers, as well as retuning the electric power steering. Hopefully these revisions make it stateside, because it makes the Outlander PHEV all the more appealing.

Those are some fantastic improvements to an already capable model. Makes sense for them to offer it first in Japan, where adoption rates of electrics are at an all time high. I think its inevitable that we'll see similar changes for NA models, its just a matter of when.

I think the continuous revisions that this model has seen, will help it to remain a segment leader. I just don't think any competing brand will be able to offer similar spec/performance at this price point, especially with a new model.

I still wish they made the Eclipse Cross as a PHEV. It couldn't hurt their profit margins and could quite possibly prove to be another lucrative Hybrid product during a time the brand finally picking up pace.

I think that's an inevitable update well see on the EC, so long as the system doesn't require too much R&D to adapt. Mitsubishi's e Evolution concept debuted as the brands first attempt at a performance EV.

Another possibility is the RVR going hybrid to further build on its sporty edge.

Right now higher performing hybrids with some sporty edge is in demand, RVR couldn't be better for that purpose.

Realistically Mitsubishi could put their hybrid system into any number of their other platforms. I just don't know if the EC or RVR are selling in the numbers required for the company to consider investing further into them.

The Outlander shares the same platform as the Eclipse Cross, so its really just a matter of Mitsubishi seeing a need for a more compact PHEV. I would imagine its something they passed on for the first generation model just to gain a consumer base first.

I guess it might be a case of letting volume of the new Eclipse Cross take off and then use the profits from that as it pours in for upgrades.
